Clarksdale, Mississippi, felt the economic pressures of the last decade harder than most. At its height, unemployment surged to more than 60%, and nearly half of the community’s residents lived below the poverty line. In a town where folks have few options for employment beyond working as a truck driver, at the nearby casino, or for the public schools and hospital, a Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) congregation has taken on encouraging education as a central pillar of their community outreach ministries.
Despite being a small congregation of less than 50 people, in 2012 Real Faith Christian Church challenged themselves to step out in faith and better serve their neighbors. That year they began what has become an annual back-to-school event. Members bring school supplies, fill new backpacks with the supplies, and hand out the stuffed backpacks to local kids returning for a new year of school. This year over 300 Clarksdale children received fully supplied backpacks to begin the school year off right.
The Good News of education and opportunity is alive in Clarksdale, MS, through the transformational ministries of Real Faith Christian Church!
