{"id":6793,"date":"2026-02-26T15:55:28","date_gmt":"2026-02-26T20:55:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/disciplescef.org\/blog\/?p=6793"},"modified":"2026-02-26T15:55:28","modified_gmt":"2026-02-26T20:55:28","slug":"unity-christian-church-dcef-story-partnership-black-history-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/disciplescef.org\/blog\/unity-christian-church-dcef-story-partnership-black-history-month\/","title":{"rendered":"Unity Christian Church and DCEF: A story of partnership for Black History Month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black History Month is a time for reflection, where people across the United States and Canada remember events that were the catalysts for social change and honor influential leaders who have paved the way for those in the African diaspora who follow in their footsteps.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what takes up less of the spotlight are the partnerships that equip Black communities with the resources they need to thrive.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Such is the case for our relationship with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitychristianchurchdoc.com\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Unity Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)<\/strong><\/a>, a congregation we have proudly supported for nearly four decades.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teaching believers to become Disciples in Southwest Florida<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1980, Elder Nelson Raines established the community of faith in Fort Myers, FL, a city with a significant African American population. At the time, he was its pastor, gathering members in a Jim Walters Home\u2014a prefabricated structure that got its namesake from homebuilder and fellow Floridian Jim Walter\u2014that he rented from The Bethel Primitive Baptist Church.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four years later, the faith community became affiliated with the <a href=\"https:\/\/disciples.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/fldisciples.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Florida Disciples Regional Church<\/a>&#8216;s 88<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Regional Assembly.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preaching, teaching, and proclaiming the Gospel<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6795\" src=\"https:\/\/disciplescef.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Sign-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"336\" height=\"222\" \/>As Unity Christian Church\u2019s membership and ministries grew, so did the need for its own building. Leadership reached out to us and connected with former Senior Vice President Raymond Brown.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only was he the first Black individual to serve in this position at Board of Church Extension (BCE), our ministry name at the time, but he was also President of the National Christian Missionary Convention. Under his tenure, the predominantly African American organization merged with the General Convention, making him the first President of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalconvocation.org\/?fbclid=IwY2xjawQJoJJleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETFHZ3pTU0xNcUVJY1BMYWpVc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHgevl81YUEYSGSD3d_iEiBg__-VMpcKl_wksgDoyKf3abU6x-5rz5tHyr_GP_aem_hk46K2QohUrzxnV7oh8_2A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Convocation<\/a>. Much of his time with us was devoted to a program that disbursed some of our investment portfolio to Black banks in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brown brought this passion and advocacy to his work with places of worship too, including Unity Christian Church.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When he got the call from Rev. Raines, he traveled from Indianapolis to Ft. Myers to help the pastor and his flock understand what their financing options could be.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-6796\" src=\"https:\/\/disciplescef.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Unity-Christian-Church-1986-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"445\" height=\"310\" \/>But when he arrived in the Sunshine State and sat down with church leadership, he realized that they didn\u2019t have the data he needed to start the <a href=\"https:\/\/disciplescef.org\/borrow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">loan<\/a> process.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe said, \u2018I believe in you, so I\u2019m going to go back to Indianapolis and go to bat for you,\u2019\u201d recalls Joe Long, Unity Christian Church\u2019s moderator. \u201cAnd because of his belief in us, we were able to acquire the money we needed and construct our first facility.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After receiving their funding, the congregation moved into their home in January 1986.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBCE was not like a bank, which is designed to make money,\u201d explains Long. \u201cIf you get a traditional loan, there\u2019s a chance that you can end up going into foreclosure with the bank taking the property. BCE, in my humble opinion, was not in the business of repossessing property. They were in the business of trying to make the church whole.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laying the groundwork for everlasting faith<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6797 \" src=\"https:\/\/disciplescef.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Unity-Christian-Church-2002-Addition-e1772127578497.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"305\" height=\"223\" \/>As Unity Christian Church blossomed and flourished in the 1990s, it created various ministries to serve its congregants and neighbors, including Disciples Men and Disciples Women groups. It also added youth ministries and a Sunday school, which became popular amongst the young families that worshiped in the church\u2019s sanctuary every week. As it entered the millennium, Unity Christian Church found itself in the same spot that it was in the 1980s: it needed more room. Back they came to explore financing options that could support a classroom addition to the fellowship hall and a renovation of the sanctuary.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This go-round, the funding process went smoother, helped by the congregation\u2019s previous history with us. Since Unity Christian Church was able to pay off its initial loan, it received a <a href=\"https:\/\/disciplescef.org\/borrow\/construction-loans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">construction loan<\/a> for the education wing and a <a href=\"https:\/\/disciplescef.org\/borrow\/renovation-loans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">renovation loan<\/a> for the sanctuary. In 2002\u2014a year after holding its building\u2019s mortgage burning ceremony\u2014Unity Christian Church completed the classroom addition.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBCE dared to help congregations reach their potential,\u201d says Long. \u201cIf you got in trouble, they would ask, \u2018What can we do to help this congregation remain viable?\u2019 Not only did they provide funds to build, but they also came alongside you to help you navigate the loan process.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-6798 \" src=\"https:\/\/disciplescef.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Exterior-e1772127757805.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"390\" height=\"215\" \/>The church held a mortgage burning ceremony for its education wing in 2015.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Picking up the pieces after a devastating storm<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In September 2022, Hurricane Ian swept through western Cuba, central Florida, and North and South Carolinas. Ft. Myers and the cities of Cape Coral and Naples were hit especially hard by the Category 5 hurricane, leaving millions of people without power and numerous inhabitants stranded on their roofs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The church\u2019s roof was also affected, receiving major damage that required a complete overhaul. Unity Christian Church had insurance with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insuranceboard.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Insurance Board<\/a>, which charged the congregation a 2% deductible of the building insured value or $115,000. With the roof replacement costing about $80,000, Unity Christian Church decided against turning to their insurance company since their deductible was more than what it cost to replace the roof.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6799 \" src=\"https:\/\/disciplescef.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/IMG_1186-e1772127854893.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"355\" height=\"287\" \/>Instead, Long connected with our Senior Director of Services Rev. Richard Williams, who walked him through the process of getting a loan to replace the roof and other financing options. While the funding was approved, church leadership declined the loan because they felt it would be better to use its emergency funds for the replacement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDespite the situation, Rev. Williams was great,\u201d shares Long. \u201cHe made sure that we truly understood all the nuances of what we were asking for. Other financial institutions may just give you a loan and then later you think, \u2018Oh, my God, what have I gotten myself into?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, Unity Christian Church has paid off all its loans with us and is debt free.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI would recommend <a href=\"https:\/\/disciplescef.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Disciples Church Extension Fund<\/a> (DCEF) because they are there to support ministry,\u201d concludes Long. \u201cDCEF is like family to us and they have been with us every step of the way.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Do you have a story of your faith community\u2019s partnership with us?
