{"id":6470,"date":"2025-03-19T16:55:01","date_gmt":"2025-03-19T20:55:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/disciplescef.org\/blog\/?p=6470"},"modified":"2025-03-20T13:10:24","modified_gmt":"2025-03-20T17:10:24","slug":"partnerships-foundation-god-kindom-san-diego-church","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/disciplescef.org\/blog\/partnerships-foundation-god-kindom-san-diego-church\/","title":{"rendered":"Partnerships are foundation for God&#8217;s kin-dom at San Diego church"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchristianchurch.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-6472 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/disciplescef.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Building-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"365\" height=\"320\" \/>University Christian Church<\/a> (Disciples of Christ)\/United Church of Christ in San Diego, CA is hard to miss.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resting against the pillars that frame its front entrance is an array of rainbow doors, a nod to the congregation\u2019s open and affirming stance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sound of children\u2019s laughter can be heard next door, where Hillcrest Preschool, which is part of the faith community\u2019s overall ministry, provides quality childcare at affordable rates. On the other side of University Christian Church (UCC)\u2019s building is a construction site, where offices, a social hall, and a parking lot are being built for this bustling community of faith, in addition to housing for the city.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seven years ago, however, the church\u2019s future was more complicated. While worship attendance and congregational giving was growing, this place of worship would exhaust its reserves and endowment by 2023 if it continued spending money the way that it was. But thanks in part to our guidance, UCC is now living out its mission to embody God\u2019s inclusive love more fully.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dreaming of the future<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6479\" src=\"https:\/\/disciplescef.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_4806.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"332\" height=\"332\" \/>In 2018, congregational leadership began to envision what God was calling them to be. They hired consultants, brainstormed ideas for their community of faith\u2019s future, and analyzed its finances. As they planned, five options became apparent:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Operate as they had been until they ran out of money<\/li>\n<li>Cut staff, and utilize a part-time pastor and volunteers<\/li>\n<li>Sell the property and move<\/li>\n<li>Try to better utilize their existing space and rent it out for additional income<\/li>\n<li>Redevelop half of their property to enhance their income and sell the other half to a housing developer<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the end, they went with the last option \u2014 redeveloping the property that they retained while selling a portion of it to a developer to address San Diego\u2019s housing crisis.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Faithful collaborations<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_6482\" style=\"width: 359px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6482\" class=\"wp-image-6482 \" src=\"https:\/\/disciplescef.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Interior.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"349\" height=\"349\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-6482\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rev. Richie Sanchez.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our ministry was the first partner that Senior Minister Rev. Dr. Caleb Lines considered for UCC\u2019s building project. As a lifelong Disciple, he knew that <a href=\"https:\/\/disciplescef.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Disciples Church Extension Fund<\/a> (DCEF) could provide UCC with good loan rates and support as a general ministry of the denomination. Caleb met with former President Rick Reisinger and Building and Capital Services Advisor Rev. Rosario Ibarra, who both helped him think outside the box.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey were willing to let us guide the process,\u201d he recalls. \u201cRosario was incredible. Anytime I needed anything, she was there. She was an advocate for the church.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With such a complicated process, DCEF\u2019s assistance was invaluable. It allowed UCC to identify two phases for their project, both partially funded by the sale of half of the church\u2019s property.<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phase 1<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The initial phase, supported by a <a href=\"https:\/\/disciplescef.org\/borrow\/construction-loans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">construction loan<\/a> from DCEF, saw UCC tearing down its underutilized spaces, including their chapel, social hall, patio, and classrooms, to make way for new construction of a facility for nonprofit organizations, as well as a larger education building for its preschool.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The nonprofit facility is now home to the San Diego Climate Hub, San Diego Gay Men\u2019s Chorus, and Amor Ministries, the latter of which builds the second most homes in the world after Habitat for Humanity.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn constructing this building, we wanted to be guided by our core values,\u201d explains Caleb. \u201cAt UCC, we strive to be good stewards of the earth. Our congregation is open and affirming, and its members practice peace and justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6473\" src=\"https:\/\/disciplescef.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Exterior.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"339\" height=\"339\" \/>Hillcrest Preschool, which was established by UCC in 1970, now stands on the former site of the church\u2019s social hall and patio. Its increased capacity facility provides three classrooms for toddlers and five for bigger kids.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These buildings provide two income streams for the church, through tuition and rent, respectively.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A house across the street from the church provides the third income stream to the congregation as an Airbnb rental. When the property came on the market, DCEF lent the faith community a <a href=\"https:\/\/disciplescef.org\/borrow\/propertybuilding-purchase-loans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">property purchase loan<\/a>, which has since been paid off. Currently, the house not only offers short-term homestays, but also space for occasional group meetings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fourth stream comes from long-term investments held with <a href=\"https:\/\/christianchurchfoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Christian Church Foundation<\/a>, which generate an annual income, and short-term investments with DCEF, which have a fixed-rate and maturity date.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis was not just about developing income streams,\u201d clarifies Caleb, \u201cbut about creating and strengthening relationships and partnerships. Community builds in places around the table.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phase 2<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-6474 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/disciplescef.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_1710-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"252\" height=\"248\" \/>The second phase of the project involved remodeling UCC\u2019s sanctuary building, which was in dire need of an update. While maintaining the basic flow of the facility, the faith community\u2019s little used kitchen was turned into a break room, which has helped to foster fellowship among the church\u2019s staff, volunteers, and partners. The church office was relocated to a room in the nonprofits\u2019 building, which itself is connected to the sanctuary.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for the other half of UCC\u2019s property, the church was able to mandate in its deal with a housing developer that a certain number of the units would be designated for affordable housing.<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The church today<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6471\" src=\"https:\/\/disciplescef.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_4800.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"268\" height=\"268\" \/>As he thinks back on UCC\u2019s initial five-year mark, which the congregation has exceeded, Caleb is proud of his faith community.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe started thinking early enough and gave ourselves enough time to plan,\u201d he recalls. \u201cLay leadership was great too.
