{"id":6123,"date":"2023-06-02T13:05:09","date_gmt":"2023-06-02T17:05:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/disciplescef.org\/blog\/?p=6123"},"modified":"2023-06-02T15:24:56","modified_gmt":"2023-06-02T19:24:56","slug":"doe-grant-reduce-church-energy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/disciplescef.org\/blog\/doe-grant-reduce-church-energy\/","title":{"rendered":"Take advantage of a DOE grant \u2013 and reduce your church&#8217;s energy use"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we head into the warmer months of the summer season, many congregations will be turning on their air conditioners and electric fans to keep church members cool.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While these efforts help us beat the heat, the increased usage of ACs and other cooling systems contribute to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/ghgemissions\/sources-greenhouse-gas-emissions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">13% of carbon emissions<\/a> that commercial and residential buildings are responsible for in the United States, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, what can communities of faith do to steward the environment better?<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to working with <a href=\"https:\/\/disciplescef.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Disciples Church Extension Fund<\/a> (DCEF) on a <a href=\"https:\/\/disciplescef.org\/borrow\/renovation-loans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">green loan, <\/a>adopting <a href=\"https:\/\/newchurchministry.org\/aiovg_videos\/creating-best-practices-for-creation-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">creation care best practices<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/newchurchministry.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Church Ministry<\/a>, and becoming a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discipleshomemissions.org\/missions-advocacy\/green-chalice\/green-chalice-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Green Chalice congregation<\/a>, faith communities in the U.S. can take advantage of a new funding opportunity from the Biden administration. The Department of Energy recently announced a first-of-its-kind investment to help non-profit organizations reduce energy usage in their buildings, including places of worship. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/scep\/renew-americas-nonprofits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Renew America&#8217;s Nonprofits<\/em>\u00a0<\/a>program will provide US $50 million for efficiency projects, reducing carbon emissions and lowering utility costs, allowing critical funds to be redirected to mission-focused work.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To find out more about this opportunity, Disciples can join various educational webinars:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On June 15, from 5:00 to 6:15 PM EST, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discipleshomemissions.org\/missions-advocacy\/green-chalice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Green Chalice<\/a> and ecumenical partners will be hosting <em>Get Green to Go Green: Apply for up to $200,000 for Congregational Energy Efficiency. <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/us06web.zoom.us\/webinar\/register\/WN_ax0KndDsS_q_jWcSNJMnow#\/registration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sign up<\/a> to hear from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eesi.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Environmental and Energy Study Institute<\/a> President Daniel Bresette, who will inform participants on how they can take advantage of the grant and the grant process.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/scep\/office-state-and-community-energy-programs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Office of State and Community Energy Programs<\/a> will host informational webinars from 2:00 to 3:00 PM EST on June 6 and from 3:00 to 4:00 PM EST on June 8, one of which you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/scep\/renew-americas-nonprofits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">register<\/a> to attend.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DCEF will continuously update this page as more details about the grant become available.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Is your congregation located in Canada?
